Types of furfural

Furfural extract (RPO) is one of the side products in the process of extracting lubricating oils (lubricants) by furfural. This substance has a brown color and contains sticky properties, it is also flammable and has a pungent smell. RPO is one of the products that Mehrgostar company also supplies in bulk.
In fact, this composition contains traces of lubricating oils and is rich in concentrated polycyclic aromatics. Furfural extract consists of compounds such as furfural, furan and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. For this reason, this substance is very toxic and can harm the environment.

Types of furfural extract are divided into three categories:

  1. Aromatic RPO: Among furfural types, RPOs are in the RPO 40 category and have high aromaticity, good solubility, and dark color. These types of RPO are mostly used in the production of rubber products such as hoses and belts.
  2. Naphthenic RPO: From the types of furfural, this type is also called RPO 10, it has a bright color, less aromatic and higher viscosity. For this reason, they are used in lubricants and greases. They have low volatility and good flexibility at low temperature.
  3. Paraffinic RPO: This type of furfural is also called RPO 250, which has the lowest aromatic content and the highest viscosity. This type of RPO has a very dark color and for this reason it is used in the production of rubber, wax and coatings.

Conclusion

Furfural extract is a substance that is produced as a by-product in the process of extracting lubricating oils such as lubricants. This brown compound has a viscous state and a pungent smell and is obtained from the remains of lubricating oils and compressed polycyclic aromatics. The uses of this substance include the production of furfuryl alcohol, raw materials for the production of plastics and rubber, solvent for extraction of materials, extraction of butadiene and even use as fuel. However, due to its harmful effects on the environment, its widespread use as a solvent or fuel is usually not recommended.
